LEARNING SIGHT WORDS

Teaching your child sight words will help develop their ability to read and write. Sight words are words that can memorised on sight at a quick glance. This is a strategy that will help them recognise words and accurately comprehend while reading. Learning sight words at your little one’s pace will build confidence and knowledge which will support your child to be successful in school.

Learning high frequency words by sight makes reading easier and faster, as they are not sounding out each individual word, letter by letter.

Start by introducing no more than three words at a time. Introduce unfamiliar sight words using this sequence of five teaching techniques: See & Say — Spell Reading (read and say each individual letter)— Clapping the letters — Writing on palm of hand with finger— Whiteboard/paper writing.

These varied strategies will activate the different parts of the brain. Through these teaching strategies your child will practise many repetitions of the word (seeing, hearing, speaking, spelling, and writing) with physical movements that will support long term memory of the sight words.
